[comp.os.minix] Minix available for '286 ??

pete@bally.Bally.COM (Pete Gregory ) (08/24/90)

Hi -

I am interested in getting Minix, if it will work on my '286 clone. Will
it work? Where do I get it? How much does it cost?

Also, I have three years' experience with AT&T UNIX (actually, AIX) and am
wondering:

	what IS Minix?
	what ISN'T Minix?

...I just want to have a hobby UNIX machine at home, plus possibly set up
a UUCP link to someone who will let me hook up (I may be relocating and
future employer doesn't have UUCP - yet).

My Minix-ignorance is considerable, I know...

Thanks for your help.

Minix works just fine on my '286, and I'm just using little 'ol stock-
system-no-alterations-and-tons-ofa-assembly-required(batteries not included)
Minix. You have to get it from Prentice-Hall, for the tune of about 80 bucks.
I'm not sure, but I think MINIMAL distribution MAY be allowed. I don't have
Prentice-Hall's adress off the top of my head. Perhaps someone else can help
you there.

Good background. If you can get ANYTHING to run properly on AIX, you should
not have TOO much trouble with Minix, they are both equally difficult at first.

But be warned, AIX is System V oriented, where Minix is more BSD oriented.

Minix is just what you said in the next paragraph, a good hobby. Due to
it's comparatively small scale, you're hard pressed to run anything huge on it.
Hence, no tons of software made for Minix, no TCP/IP (yet, perhaps someone
should give Phil Karn (KA9Q) a shout?), and the only true daemons that exist
are just a sync-every-30-seconds (/etc/update) and I think one other, but I
don't really know, I'm only running V1.2 (for now). So it's really not a pro-
duction-scale Unix, but, then again, it's made to run on a PC, after all! So,
all it all, it's a nice package, and worth the 80 or so bucks.

I wouldn't say so. Alot of people (myself included) don't really know WHAT
Minix is capable of doing, it's advantages, or drawbacks, if any (except per-
haps speed). We learn by doing.

BTW - Minix is more than capable of handling UUCP (for that matter, if DOS
can do it, so can Minix, which ought to tell you something).

    Anytime.

I must admit, that has got to be one of the most original .sigs I've seen
in a while!
