[comp.os.minix] Disk Manager and Minix

matten@handel.CS.ColoState.Edu (jeffrey matten) (09/12/90)

Last week the professor in my Op Sys class gave us Minix version 1.2
We are supposed to familiarize ourselves with it. I get it up and
running - no problem. I have one floppy drive and one hard disk.
I partition the hard disk with Disk Manager. A partition is cleared
out for Minix. [formatted] Disk Manager asks me how to prepare the newly
formatted partition. It gives me three choices Xenix, pc-ix, and other.
I chose Xenix. I guessed that since Xenix and Minix are both Unix derivatives
they should have similar file systems. When I choose Xenix it gives me a
choice of 3 or 4 I have no idea what these numbers refer to. I boot Minix.
Then I use mkfs /dev/hd4 3000 to format the partition for Minix. Then I try
to mount it on /user. I use /etc/mount /dev/hd4 /user ... it upchucks
and tells me hd4 is not a mountable file system.

Did I get everything totally wrong? The professor for my Op Sys
course left for Switzerland to attend a conference. He'll be back in
two weeks. The day he returns, the assignment is due. So I'll get no
help at this end. I suppose I could manage from one floppy drive; having
the files on a hard drive would make this semester more bearable.
