C-Kermit 5A is almost ready for release. If you don't know what Kermit is, skip this message. Version 5A has many new features, including sliding window packet protocol, an MS-DOS Kermit-like script programming language with many extensions, support for transfer of files in a variety of international character sets based on the Roman and Cyrillic alphabets, and TCP/IP support via BSD sockets library. It has been tested successfully on most varieties of UNIX except MINIX. Because of its new features, C-Kermit 5A is much larger than previous releases, and a full-featured version will not fit into MINIX's 64K+64K address space. Hence, C-Kermit is now configurable at compile for removal of selected features. Volunteers to test C-Kermit 5A in (original V7-like) MINIX on 286-based platforms would be most welcome, as would anyone who would like to try it out on the newer POSIX-compliant MINIX. Both implementations will probably require some fiddling. It would be best if testers had Internet FTP access. Please contact me directly if you're interested. Thanks! Frank even wrote a book about it. I, too, am interested in having the new kermit run on MINIX, so I would also encourage people to help beta test it (especially people who are beta testing the MINIX ANSI C compiler).
