I have Minix 1.5.10 and Gordon's Virtual Consoles installed (thanks Gordon!). I tried to install Estdio, but it didn'n seem to like some of my source, so I presume (obviously, actually) that the Virtual Console patches may screw up Estdio since Estdio wants to modify some of the same files that Vcon played with, while each is expecting vanilla 1.5.10. Has anyone successfully installed both of these packages? Now, since I also have a spiffy new 386/33 with 4 Megs of RAM, I was thinking it's about time I tried to install Bruce's 386 patches. However, I have a few questions. How stable is the current version of the 386 patches? I'm really quite happy with 16-bit 1.5 right now, it's quite stable. Is the 386 version still buggy, crash prone? I seem to see quite a few people having nasty problems with it. Can I still boot from floppy, or *must* I use shoelace? Can I use the same physical file system for both? (ie, if the 386 version is unstable then I can still boot 16-bit minix from floppy and use the same partition regardless of whether I'm running 16 or 32 bit? -- yes I know I have to use different binaries.) And now for the biggy. It would be *really* nice to have all THREE of the above patches working -- 386 Minix with virtual consoles and fast I/O with Estdio. Has anyone successfully done this? Right now I'd be happy with just 386 and Vcon, I don't *need* fast I/O, but after using Vcon I don't think I could do without it. Respond via E-mail to wayne@csri.utoronto.ca and I'll post a summary. -- "The number of programs that can be done with the Hubble Space Telescope has always greatly exceeded the time available for their execution, and this remains true even with the telescope in its current state." -- HST Science Working Group and User's Commitee Report, 1990 June 29. Right now I'd be I have been using virtual consoles and estdio with Minix-386 for almost a year now. Consider them part of Minix-386. -- Bruce Evans evans@syd.dit.csiro.au
