[comp.os.minix] Need Basic Info On Minix

a577@mindlink.UUCP (Curt Sampson) (11/01/90)

I don't know much about this kind of thing, so I'm looking for a little help.

I've got an IBM AT clone with a 12 MHz 80286, 2 MB of memory and a 40 MB hard
drive. I'm probably going to be buying a largish UNIX workstation next year,
but I'd like to have a UNIX box of some sort to use until then. It's not worth
more than a few hundred dollars for hardware and software, though, as I'm going
to be selling the thing in less than a year anyway.

One of the things I want to do is run Waffle (a BBS) on my machine as well as
send/recive news and mail. I also need some text formatting stuff, editors, a
C compiler, and the like. Writer's workbench would be great, but I could
easily live with nroff and vi. It would also be good if I could leave a small
DOS partition on my machine and be able to transfer files between UNIX and that
DOS partition easily.

What is around that will suit my needs? Coherent looks tempting, but I've
heard that there are problems with UUCP compatability as well as a few other
Bad Things. Someone else told me to look at MINIX, thus my posting here.

Please email your responses, I don't read this newsgroup. If I get any
requests, I will summarise to this newsgroup in a week or two.

Thanks for all your help!
