From: mo at LBL-UNIX (Mike O'Dell [system]) Date: 10 Sep 1982 10:31:42-PDT The performance numbers quoted in my other note are provisional, and shouldn't be regarded as final. They are the result of only a few experiments. As for the comment about IP/TCP performance, the protocols are complex because they are designed to operate in a very complex environment with very harsh assumptions, which transcend the restricted world of local nets. Whatever performance costs are exacted by using IP/TCP are generally worth it because of the wide implementation universe of the protocol suite. While other protocols might could go faster in favorable circumstances, the ability to widely communicate certainly outweighs anthing else. While other protocols may be implemented for local network use, IP/TCP is by far the best thing around for general-purpose communications. -Mike
