[comp.os.minix] Generic 68000 minix / 386 Unix cross development

steve@hacker.UUCP (Stephen M. Youndt) (11/12/90)

I have a rather different intent for minix than anyone I've read from so far.
What I'd like to do, assuming I can get the source in the format I need, is
hack up a version for an imbedded 68K system that I'll be building. This is
a just for fun project, so price is very much an object. The Book mentions
a simulator that allows a "VAX or other minicomputer running Unix" to run
PC minix. Anyway what I want to know is: Is such a simulator available for
a 68K version of minix? and/or Is the 68K minix C compiler portable enough
so that I can compile it under 386 Unix and expect it to generate decent
ROMable code.

For those of you who are bound to ask. No, I don't expect this to be easy.
And No, I don't intend to run the entirety of minix. I'll not be using the
file system unless I have enough RAM in my system to use a RAM disk, because
I don't intend to have either floppies or a hard disk.

If you have any ideas as to whether I can get such a combination of elements
or some of them, so that I can at least get the source code and a working
cross compiler (the simulator would be gravy) on 1.2 Meg floppies in "tar"
or MS-DOS format or via anonymous uucp (not ftp) I'd be eternally grateful
and have a lot of fun. If you have answers, questions, comments, or whatever,
contact me via e-mail. Thanks in advance. -- SMY
