[comp.os.minix] Minix-startup problems

caxwgk@pkinbg.UUCP (Wolfgang Kuehnel ) (11/19/90)

Hello out there you experts,

I got some trouble with my brand new minix 1.5 I got on 3 1/2 disks,
and copied to some 5 1/4 disks using the Norton utilities. Was that
a bad idea? Is there anything better to be recommended?

I got problems booting Minix 1.5 on a clone XT with a NEC V20 cpu, 1,2 Mb
5 1/4 and 720 kb 3 1/2 floppies, 32 Mb hard disk and 1 Mb Ram.

The system reads "Universal Boot" and "Root File System" correctly, but
never prompts for the "usr" floppy.

When looking at the process table (hit F1/F2) there are serveral processes,
one but last named "init", last named "3". (Why that, I wonder.)
Having had a look at the /etc/rc-File one can see that the first action
is to ask the user for the "/usr"-disk. So, why can't init execute that?

I removed the harddrive to see if thats the problem. The kernel then
complains that it can't read the hd partition table. Where from does the
kernel know that there shoud be a harddisk?

Anybody seen something like that? Any hint would help!
Thank you!
