[comp.os.minix] Compatibility Report Update

craig.mclaughlin@amail.amdahl.COM (11/28/90)

No, I haven't gone and died on you all. The long absence of the
Compatibility List is because I am doing a restructuring of it. There
are too many different pieces of HW out there, and too many flavors
of Minix to make it easy to compress the information into the past
form.

Therefore, I'd like anyone and everyone who can to drop me a line,
telling me a bit about your configuration. Here are some hints:

PC Users: -Brand/Chip/Speed of motherboard. You 386 users -- do you
           have a cache?
-Brand/Type/Size of Hard Drive, or whatever storage media.
If you have a hard drive, do you use Shoelace?
-Other HW information -- type of video, amount of memory,
           serial ports, etc...
-If known, what BIOS? Some have some trouble, apparently.

ST Users: -Which machine?
-Brand/Size of hard drive. (Are there different controllers?)
-memory size, serial ports, etc etc..

Macintosh: -Machine type, which chip/speed.
           -storage media/size
           -memory, serial ports, etc..
           -system level: 6.0.5. 6.0.7, etc

Amiga: -Model of machine
       -memory, etc
       -storage configuration

This is just a rough idea. I apologize to users of the Mac, the ST,
and the Amiga. I don't really know your systems that well. If you
know of other potential hangups as far as hardware compatibility goes,
please let me know, and be sure to tell me how they can cause an effect.

No matter what the system type, I also need to know what level of
Minix you are using, whether or not it was 'prentice-hall' or 'patched
from the net,' and what kind of extra stuff you may have patched into
the system. For example, my system would look like this:

  Zenith XT, 8088/10MHz
Seagate ST151 20M/65ms MFM hard drive
  CGA card running monochrome monitor
2 serial ports (1 w/ 2400 baud modem, other unused)
  AMI? BIOS
  640K

Running Prentice-Hall 1.5, unpatched. <- changes would be anything
                                            which require a rebuild of
                                            the OS.
Notes: also ran Prentice-Hall 1.3, unpatched.

Again, if there is anything else, please let me know, with a quick
explanation of what it means...

I'll be putting out the restructured list next week. Thanks for the
patience.
