Hi Everyone, [hardware: DTK Turbo XT Kalok 32 meg rll drive 640k ram Hercules Mono] I've been using Minix 1.5 for about three months now and I am generally quite happy with the P-H distribution. However, recently my hard disk failed I had to re-install the OS. Since this time Minix has been crashing quite regularly usually with the message: File system panic: bad major dev 21 The dev number, however, is not always 21--sometimes it's 0. My first question is: What is the significance of this error message and why does the number change? Another thing I've always (even before the disk failure) had problems with is the amount of time I have to have my computer off to return it to a known state--usually over 10 minutes after a Minix crash. Why is this? Surely a minute is enough to clear out any little nasties un the hardware? Occasionally (about 20% of the time) Minix crashes after I'm prompted to insert the /usr diskette in /dev/fd0 with the message: Debug exception process number 1, pc = 0x15F0:0x00000000 kernel panic: exception in kernel, mm or fs Once again what is the significance of the message and how can I avoid it!? I also get error nessages (though not as frequent) about inconsistent memory base....All of this is quite recent since when I first installed Minix it worked pretty well. The final problem I'm having is with term. It seemed to work well as a vt100 emulator when I first installed Minix, but once again ever since my hard disk crash I have found it to be next to useless. Any suggestions here? And a final question that's not really a problem. Can someone please email me directions on how to create a *universal* boot disk ie. what changes do I need to make to config.h? Any help on all this would be *greatly* appreciated as I'm really keen on using the OS. If you want to email me I'll summarize. ___ chris brougham brog@sloth.bc.ca

Hi, Thanks to everone who responded. The problems I was having with Minix 1.5 were do to too many cards in my P.C. In other words a power supply problem. I removed some seldom used cards and all the problems I was having went away. Phew! -- cb... chris brougham work: brougham@whistler.sfu.ca home: brog@sloth.bc.ca
