[comp.os.minix] MINIX on suns

NICHOLS%GRIN1.BITNET@cunyvm.cuny.edu (Capitan Holy Hippie (Nichols,Alan M)) (11/28/90)

We are trying to get minix running on a sun 3/50 using the pc simulator
provided in the MINIX distribution. The simulator compiles with a few
warnings, and then chokes on the 10th instruction saying that 'this opcode is
not defined'

Has anybody gotten this running on a sun? Does anybody have any clue as to
where to go from here?

Thanks much,

Alan Nichols

I've tried to run pcsim(from an old minix distribution) on a MC68000
under UNIX. Had similar effects!

The reason for this is, that the simulator was written for a VAX
(a little endian machine) to simulate the 8086 (also little endian).
The Motorola MC680xx's are BIG ENDIAN! You have to change the
simulator to take that into account.

I actually spend a great deal of time with the simulator. I finally
got it running on the sun3 and sun4 under SunOS 4.0.3 (4.1) and was
running programs like 'getty', 'login', 'sh', 'ls' and such.

I sent the changes back to Mr. T. after I got all of them integrated.

There are still bugs in my simulator. I have not used it in over a
year. (I have, in fact, packed it up into the archives.)

Since I can no longer make any claims about it working any more, if you
want the simulator I worked on, let me know. I will mail out EXACTLY 2
COPIES of it. If you are requestor number 3 or above you will receive
the address for those who where first. I will also post the address of
the first 2 recipients, and mail each of them the others address.

My only request is that if anyone makes it truely useful that they mail
it back to me.
