[comp.os.minix] 1.6.10 :

ast@cs.vu.nl (Andy Tanenbaum) (12/05/90)

Just when everyone has stabilized on 1.5.10, here we go again. I am
about to send 1.6.10 to the beta test group. If you want to join this
group (i.e., get 700K of quasi-debugged compressed cdifs), send a message to
Glen Overby at overby@plains.nodak.edu now. If the beta group likes it,
maybe I'll post a subsequent version to the net. The posting is relative to
to 1.5.10 (== PH 1.5), so you need that fully operational to beta test.

Comments on 1.6.10:

1. Designed for ANSI C (compiler not included); hopefully works with K&R C.
2. Supports V1 and V2 file systems (partitions to 2000 gigabytes, etc.)
3. Thought to conform to P1003.1 Chapters 5 and 6
4. Zillions of other changes.

Technically, no, but since the FS and MM code is identical for all
versions, and nearly all the changes between 1.5.10 and 1.6.10 are in
FS and MM, with a bit of work, 1.6.10 might work on the 68000. It is
definitely worth a try.

Dear Andy,

take care that the new code will be compilable by an 'old-fashioned'
K&R compiler. This will make the experimental guys which port MINIX
to new platforms happy (say, for a T800, a K&R-compiler is easier to get/write
than a full-fledged ANSI compiler).

These experimentalists are indispensable for the progress of MINIX.

And please take also those poor people into account who use a
compiler (bcc) which cannot assign structures. Not everybody
working with Minix-386 has enough memory to run GCC.

(It is fascinating how fast a fighter for ANSI-C like me "There
is no C but ANSI-C" changes his mind if he is forced to use an
old compiler).

Alternatively you can make the source code for the compiler and
people will make it work on a 386 (This would get you lots of
applause :-).

There will be another small 386 compiler (with source) available soon -
which assigns structures, of course.
Hope you are on-line with c68!
