I've just purchased 5.10 through the Computer Literacy Book Store in Sunnyvale, on 3.5" diskettes for the PC. The first copy I got had a bad /usr disk (disk 5.) Computer Lit. was very good about giving me a second copy, but it is in worse shape, both /root (disk 4) and "System binaries #2" are in bad shape. I'm going back to Computer Lit. tonight, but I'm begining to wonder if there is a quality control problem with the 3.5" distribution. Has anyone else had similar problems? Should I switch to 5.25"? (I have both drives on my PC.) [about 3.5" disk problems]
I have a 1.5 disk set on 3.5" diskettes, and I did have problems reading one
or two of the disks on my Teac 1.44MB floppy drive, but NO problems with a
720K drive as well as with a different 1.44MB drive (unknown brand).
I've also noticed problems with the auto-density switching. When I
read/write a 720 disk, I get a couple errors when crossing 360K, and it
continues on fine from there. I've had other problems reading a disk once I
got an error on it; I wrote all of these off as a minor nuisance and didn't
look into them further.
See if the problem will go away by using /dev/pc0 (360K) or /dev/ps0 (720K
on a 3.5") and if you've got the hardware available, try a different drive.
