Earlier today I posted the previous article, since then I had a play. I used a Compaq 386/33 to boot up 1.5.10 on 1.2M drive A and using two DOS formatted floppies (1.44M for B)...... dd if=/dev/at0 of=/dev/at1 bs=512 count=1200 :::: got unrecov. disk error on dev. 2/0, block 360 dd: read error 720+0 records in/out. dd if=/dev/at1 of=/dev/at0 bs=512 count=1200 1.2M just created boots on anything with 1.2M drive A(Zenith 286 desk- top, Compaq 386/33 and when I got home also on my 386). 1.44M also booted ok on Zenith 386/33 desktop and Apricot 386/33. Tried the same routine at home using the new 1.2M and ignoring the errors generated on output, the floppy boots ok, reproduces ok using diskcopy and dd. One piece of luck, while using dd, I put a dsdd floppy in and it failed, tore off the label on my original to find that that was also dsdd (The minix Centre supplies stuff on 360k) Minix on my system doesn't like dsdd floppies to boot from (since the 286 -> 386 upgrade). File Systems on 360K are ok however. Reason why 1.3 booted ok was due to the fact that I used a 1.2M floppy to diskcopy it from the original 360k. It therefore appears that there are a few gotchas in this area and if anyone experiences similar problems, then mix and match may get you out of a hole. Now I'm fully back up on 1.5.10 and tearing out what hair is left trying to figure out my shoelace problems, then to Bruce's 32-bit stuff after which I should have no hair to worry about, but there are always toe and finger nails that mercifully do grow again.
