[comp.os.minix] Larger RAM disks without a hard drive

bvickers@ics.uci.edu (Brett J. Vickers) (12/31/90)

Is there currently a way to get larger RAM disks within MINIX, but
without using a hard drive (for the image). The reason I ask is because
I have 8 megs of memory, and no hard drive support yet (I have a SCSI
drive). I'd like to set up a large RAMdisk into which I can place the
compiler, header files and library routines. That way I can more easily
rebuild the kernel (with a scsi device driver).

Also, I've noticed that when I boot MINIX (using Boot Disk #1) and
hit "s" for a larger RAM disk, my request for the larger RAM disk is
always ignored. For some reason MINIX won't let me break the
130k ram disk barrier.

PS. I posted earlier about not being able to boot MINIX from my 1.2M
floppy drive. Evidently, it was not MINIX that was at fault, but
my drive! It decided to stop working about the time I started
     running MINIX.
