[comp.os.minix] Hi + Bye + *.os.* ratings

ast@cs.vu.nl (Andy Tanenbaum) (01/02/91)

I am off to Japan for 3 weeks tomorrow. I will be speaking at the workshop
on workstation operating systems being run by Prof. Sin Hitotsumatsu of
Tokyo Denki University, as well as lots of other places. Don't send me
mail or you will get a 10 page blurb on Amoeba in reply. (If you want the
10 page blurb, get it by FTP from midgard.ucsc.edu in pub/amoeba, where it
lives, along with about 1000 pages of papers and documents on Amoeba.)

Just to clear up any confusion, Amoeba is a high-end, industrial-strength
distributed system aimed at universities, research labs, corporations etc.
We are running on a collection of 50 machines. That seems like a nice number.
It is definitely not for the lone hobbyist with a small machine (e.g.,
8M 386 with only 100M disk). The only reason I even mention it here is that
many people ask me about it constantly, and I know that many of the people
who read this newsgroup are potentially interested in it for their
university or company. The blurb tells more. Also, see my paper in the
Dec. 1990 Communications of the ACM.

Also published in Dec. 1990, was a review of MINIX in Byte Magazine. Since
I am going to be interviewed by various publications in Japan, more reviews
will no doubt appear there. There appears to be a lot of interest in MINIX
in the Far East.

Happy 1991 everyone!
