[comp.os.minix] Amiga Minix and the 68010

Can the Amiga Minix run on a machine with a 68010?

If not will their be a version soon that supports this?

Not really. It might boot (no guarantees!), but it will crash as soon as
the first exception occurs.

I'm not sure. As far as 68010 support is concerned, you can always
drop in that good old 68000, because the speedup is very minor.
General 680x0 support would be very desirable, but requires some work.

My recent article on 680X0 porting shows that a 680X0 will crash as soon as
the first context switch occurs, because the kernel code does not know about
the 680X0 format word. The article also tells you how to fix it , both in a
quick and dirty fashion and "properly".

Of course this isn't much good to you if you can't get the machine running in
order to recompile the kernel :-)

General 680X0 support is more interesting, because you need to be able to
detect the processor type when booting and act accordingly. Some early
versions of OS9/68k did this quite happily, until Microware decided that they
could make more money selling the 68020 version at a higher price .....
