[comp.os.minix] Minix Compatibility

ken@driwash.UUCP (04/07/87)

Just wanted to report that I was able to run MINIX on a Kaypro PC.
I also ran it on an IBM XT which has a Microsoft Mach 10 card (10Mhz 8086)
installed. The Kaypro has a CGA card and the IBM an EGA and both
had the problem with strange screen characters while scrolling which
has already been described.

The Kaypro machine has 768K of memory, the extra 128K being addressed
at paragraph D000h or something like that. If someone with a 768K machine
figures out how to write a RAM disk driver which can use this memory
I would love to see it.

|
| Well, Monmouth College's copy of the 640K PC package arrived yesterday.
| Last evening I tried to bring up a copy on my personal machine- a Tandy
| 1000. (Most of the PC's at Monmouth are AT&T 6300's- MINIX runs great on
| them, though I haven't tried the HD yet.)
|
| Summary: MINIX won't run on the Tandy 1000.
+---------------

I got it today (YAAY!!!) and tried it on my ITT XTRA -- with the old ROMs
which are not totally compatible with the PC. (Again, I haven't tried the
HD yet.)

Summary: MINIX runs fine on the ITT XTRA.

Thank you, Dr. Tanenbaum, for a UNIXlike system for my PC that doesn't bankrupt me
and that works.

I have a PC Brands 25 Mhz 386 with a 100 megabyte IDE harddrive,
4 meg of memory, a 1.2 meg and a 1.44 meg floppy, and a VGA monitor.
I was wondering if anyone had Minix 1.5 running on this or a similar
system. Please reply by E-mail so as not to clutter up the news group.

			Thanx,
				Ken
