[comp.os.minix] Help needed making a 3.5" root disk for PC Minix 1.5

wkt@rodos2.cs.adfa.oz.au (Warren Toomey) (03/11/91)

For once I am asking a question about Minix!

I've just borrowed a Toshiba 386SX laptop from work, with a 3.5" 1.44M disk
drive. My problem is that I cannot build a root Minix floppy for it.

I have my own machine with 5.25" 360K and 1.2M disks, hard disk & Minix 1.5.
I've built a Minix boot image using Guy Helmer's bootblok posted recently,
and kermited it to the laptop (under MS-DOS), dumped it to a 3.5" floppy
using Norton Utilities, and it boots fine.

I then built a 300K root file structure on a 360K floppy, moved it to DOS:

	% cat /dev/fd1 | doswrite C rootimag	, or
	% dd if=/dev/fd1 bs=1024 count=360 | doswrite C rootimag , or
used Norton Utilities to do the same

then kermited it to the laptop and downloaded the root image to a 3.5"
floppy using Norton Utilities.

Now, after booting the 3.5" disk that boots, I swap in disk2, hit `=' to
copy the root structure into a RAM disk. This works (no `bad root structure'
complaints), I'm told to remove the disk, and then it sits there doing
nothing. F1 indicates that init is using all the CPU time, but no prompt
appears.

I've downloaded these boot and root images to 360K floppies using NU, and
they boot and go quite happily on my own machine.

Could anybody with 3.5" experience give me a clue as to what I'm doing
wrong, and how I can fix it. It's so frustrating to have it boot but
do nothing afterwards.

Please email suggestions/questions, and I'll post a summary here for
others who might be in the same situation now or in the future.

Thanks in advance,

	Warren Toomey.
