[comp.os.minix] Read error when booting

scholes@spot.Colorado.EDU (SCHOLES MARTIN LEE) (03/13/91)

Please forgive me if I am missing something obvious, or if this question
has been asked before, but...
I am having difficulty getting Minix to boot on my 386. The machine
does the POST, and then the top line reads, "Booting MINIX v1.5, etc, etc."
This lasts for just a few seconds before the second screen line flashes,
"Read error: Automatic reboot." The machine then does what it promises,
and reboots, and reboots, and reboots, until I take the disk out.
My machine is an old Micronix 386-20, with 6 meg of RAM, a 200M IDE
drive (can't believe this is the cause) with a integrated floppy
controller (tho this may be). The machine has a paradise VGA card,
and a 287 coprocessor. I shadow the BIOS and VGA, but unshadowing
them didn't change a thing. It has a 1.2M floppy (A:), and a 720k
floppy(b:).
The MINIX disks (360k) are issued by our school, and boot OK on the
school boxes (5Mhz XTs). I tried all three boot disks: PC/XT, AT, and
Generic, all give the same response.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanx, Marty
