[comp.os.minix] Minix v1.6.x, When?

mike.irons@lynx.northeastern.edu (03/14/91)

Minix v1.6.(11?) was sent to the beta-users@plains (though I didn't get
it {thanks NU CCS admin}) and I was wondering when it will be posted to all
us regular types? I would be very interested in getting the upgrade. Is this
going to happen in the near future pray tell? Could Glen Overby put the
diffs that went through the beta-user mailing list into a directory for as-is
use through the archive-server and FTP.

Also, what is the status of various versions of certain packages?
Fred's updated uucp, amoeba (missing from plains upgrade package), and the
sources for c68/c386 (which were said to be put on plains, as well as thee
NLMUG sources)

			(use this if mike.irons@lynx... bounces)

			acm118@dworkin.ccs.northeastern.edu	(should work)

I wasn't going to post 1.6.11 to the whole group. There were too many
problems, mostly due to the fact that I have entirely switched over to ACK
ANSI compiler. Some things, like headers and libraries, didn't work
perfectly with the old compiler. I didn't have the time to get it worked
out. The new stdio is ANSI

If there is someone who has both the time and especially the expertise to
take the current version, 1.6.14, and see what has to be changed to make
it work with both compilers and the old and new libraries, let me know.
This is definitely NOT a job for enthusiastic beginners. Experts only.
That might be reason to post the 1.5 ==> 1.6.14 diffs to the beta list.
But that will still be an intermediate version. Nevertheless, people who
want to get it just have to drop Glen Overby a note to get on the beta list.
That list operates in burst mode. Most of the time nothing happens. Then
after a new release, lots of activity.

1. W-NEWS is currently being beta-tested worldwide. Looks good, so keep
    your eyes on this newsgroup.

2. W-MAIL is undergoing a cleanup, after lots of optimizations in the code.
   Should be posted soon, too.

3. U-MAIL is undergoing a _heavy_ change: it now supports internetworking
a la sendmail (i.e. a network daemon). It will take quite some time to
get this cleaned up, but I might post the current version (3.49D, see
header of this message) if people want it.

4. UUCP/4E is now in pre-alpha test phase on several machines over here
(most notably "minixug", "uwalt" and "sensei"). It runs fine, but
needs (yes, again) some cleaning up and, if possible, some speed
fine tunings (I am not happy with the 90% line utilization...).
Also, it needs proper documentation this time.

5. All other MicroWalt projects have been set aside for a while, to get
UUCP/4E out as soon as possible. Many, many people are waiting for
it, so I thought that would be best.

6. NLMUG Advanced MINIX is also undergoing have changing. We are now in
the "Unification" phase, which basically means that we are merging all
existing versions of MINIX into one source tree. The ultimate goal is
to have only some system #if's in MM and the kernel dir, not in FS and
the commands. This should be OK in half a year or so, maybe sooner.

7. All NLMUG stuff (correct name: MUGNET Software Library) _will_ be
stuffed into various FTP-servers, as soon as we get a means of sending
the stuff over cheaply. It is not fun to send 30Mbyte of stuff to the
US over a phone line :-(

I am afraid it will be a buch of floppies being sent around the world...

Cheers,
	Fred
