[comp.os.minix] Can't Boot my PS/2 55sx with Minix 1.5

Steve Houser <houser@dunvagen.usmsas.maine.edu> (03/27/91)

Hello-
Well, Ive finally recieved Minix 1.5 after a few years of 1.3
and trying to get all the updates through the net I finaly gave
up and sent in my check!

Unfortunately, I have a few computers at home, most with 5 1/4 drives
so I figured I'd be running Minix on those, only to discover
after starting in again on this here newsgroup, that there is Minix
 -386! How wonderful, my brand-new PS/2 could use a nice 32-bit
 Operating system!

I recompiled the kernel, fs.. etc (allthough it only appeared i needed
to compile the kernel) with the ps_wini driver (it says it works on
a 55sx) then re-compiled all in tools, and made my image, copied to
a 1.4M disk, and plopped it in the ol IBM box.

When I boot, I get the MINIX banner at the top of the screen, and then
the OS is loaded (at least I think it is), the disk stops spinning and
nothing... absoloutely nothing, not even the menu.

Anyone have any Ideas? ive been playing with it for a few days now but
cannot seem to find that ureka! that I'm looking for. Everything seems
to work fin on my 286 clone (w/4mb, AT controller).

The PS/2 has - 2M, 30M drive (esdi) and the ROM BIOS byte matches with
the one in cstart.c (that was mentioned in the 1.5 manual set) And I have
PH MINIX 1.5 - right out of the box.

 Thanks, any help would help!
