[comp.os.minix] Bnews

chris@sloth.bc.ca (Chris Brougham) (03/30/91)

Hello everyone,

I think this topic has been addressed in various ways but I
still can't seem to get a difinitive answer on bringing up news
on pc minix 1.5. I would really appreciate some help on this and as
I don't bring in this group to my site could you please e-mail
a response directly to me.

I have uucp and u-mail up and running on my xt. Everything works
well and I was surprised at how easy this was.
(I had to re-hack some of the umail code because the security feature
was preventing reading /tmp files).
I can send and receive mail from my host site and everything works great.

Now I want to bring in news (I currently run waffle on the dos
side of the xt). I understand that there has been a port of a
16 bit compress (hacked from coherent?), I know plains.nodak.edu
has Bnews and some variant of rn my questions are:

Is there a 16 bit compress for pc-minix available?

I've had some problem compiling Bnews because PH 1.5 seems to have
not included timeb.h in include/sys. (I also noticed param.h was
missing). Where can a find these crucial include files?

Will rn be overkill (I don't bring in to many groups)? Has anyone
tried to compile the rn from plains.nodak.edu?

Any help on these questions would be very greatly appreciated.
Of course I will summarize all the responses for the net. If
I can get news up and running I will also write a detailed account
for those other users who want to have Internet news and mail access for
minix.
