From: Bill Lee <lee@UTEXAS-11> Date: 19 Oct 1982 at 0933-CDT Take a look at the Oct 20 issue of Electronics magazine. On the cover is a painting of the 1982 Achievement Award winners, namely Dennis M. Ritchie and Ken Thompson. There is the first year in the awards 9 year history that the winners were software types rather than hardware people. The history of Unix and C is detailed as well as some of the motivations behind the development. Long time Unix types have probably seen most of it before but it makes for interesting reading. Also in this issue, on page 184, is a photo of Bill Joy pointing at what appears to be a uucp address on a blackboard. This is part of a half page blue box titled "Joy: compiler of Unix enhancements". Bill is described as "another example of a good graduate student who didn't finish" according to some unnamed Berkeley professor. Other good, but probably familiar stuff, is described as part of the software section of the annual technology update. This Unix business looks like it might be more than just a passing fad. -------
