First, thanks to all the people who suggested booting the v1.5 demo disk and using mkfs to get my hard disk in action. That worked perfectly and I have gotten all the sources installed on my hard disk. I now have all the upgrade kits ready to use as well. Unfortunately, I didn't do my homework as well as I should. I tried to apply the d1.1-1.2 kit to my sources and ran into a very basic problem: there's no patch program on my system that will work. I tried to get fix, pam, and patch (from the v1.3 upgrade kit) to work, and failed in each case. Fix and pam don't work because there are patches for more than one file in one file. I can't get patch to compile under v1.1 (it seems to be missing some /usr/include/sys files), and the v1.5 demo disk isn't set up to compile anything. Since I'd really prefer to do this whole job on my PC (I know, I'm a masochist...) would some kind soul please send me a uuencoded binary for patch? Is there some obvious reason why that won't work with my v1.5 demo disk? If this doesn't work, I guess I can survive carrying floppies back and forth to work for a few days... Thanks again, David
