I am interested in studying minix but would rather run it under UNIX using the simulator than try to fight it out on a real PC. Before I order the tape, I would like to hear from people who have gone this route. Does it really work? Are there any significant limitations (other than speed)? How difficult will it be to port to System V.2? Will I be cheating myself out of the best part of the education if I don't run it on the real iron? What about the UNIX-based cross compiler? If I do decide to run minix on a real PC, can I at least do the compiling under UNIX and somehow get the executables to the PC? Or will the output of the UNIX-based compiler only run under the simulator? Any information, hints, warnings, and experience reports will be gratefully accepted. It is on ftp.cs.vu.nl in minix/simulator, but it is undergoing revision now, so if you get the current version, check that directory in a couple of weeks to see if there is a new one.
