[comp.os.minix] Demo Disk

dcox@magnus.ircc.ohio-state.edu (Dena A Cox) (02/21/91)

I've been debating for a while if I should purchase Minix.
  Last night I downloaded the Demo disk, Wrote it to a 5.25 {IBM}
and tried it on my Zenith 386/16. Didn't work. Got some sort of a Panic
error.

My question is, Is there any one out there who runs Minix on a Zenith?
The manual said if the demo dosn't run, Full Minix may not run either.
I want to make sure I can use it before I actually buy it.

                                              Thank you,
                                                Robert Douglas

I have a Zenith 386/16 (though I've replaced the Z449 video card from the
dawn of VGA with a Z549... :-( . I took the 1.5.10 distribution out of the
box and it runs "successfully" on my 386/16. It booted (with the
previously discussed awful noise as it tries to break the 1.2M drive :-)
from floppy and read the hard disk OK. I do not run minix on that system
normally (no disk space), and the 1.2 version did not run successfully on
it (unexpected interrupt panic). But you should be safe getting 1.5 .

I have a copy of the demo disk (kind of) for Minix. Unfortunately, I do
not have a program that will make a byte for byte copy of it.
One such program I know of is called rawrite (I have seen rawrite.c and rawrite.exe)
but I cannot seem to find either of these anywhere.
help?
