ast@cs.vu.nl (Andy Tanenbaum) (06/12/91)
While this announcement has nothing to do with MINIX, I thought I would post it here too. Who knows, maybe there is a MINIX hacker, who, in real life does research in distributed or parallel systems. Andy Tanenbaum ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am looking for a researcher to join my distributed systems group for a year. A typical candidate might be a "postdoc," i.e. someone who will soon receive his or her Ph.D. in Computer Science, or it might be a professor on sabbatical. In the past, the Dept. has had many visitors, in both categories. To qualify for this position, you should have some research experience in operating systems, distributed systems or languages, parallel systems or languages, or some related area, and have some publications in one (or more) of these areas. Systems people are strongly encouraged to apply. Theorists need not bother: The European Common Market already has a glut of butter, milk, wine, and theorems. Our research centers around the Amoeba distributed operating system. For a brief introduction, see the Dec. 1990 Communications of the ACM or the May 1990 IEEE Computer Magazine. To get a large collection of Amoeba papers and manuals, FTP to ftp.cs.vu.nl (192.31.231.42) and look in amoeba. We are interested in the following research areas: - Distributed operating system kernels - Distributed languages and applications - Simulating shared memory on disjoint-memory machines - Wide-area transparent operating systems The ideal candidate would be someone who comes here, studies Amoeba, thinks up a mutually interesting research project relating to Amoeba, then designs, implements, and tests it, and finally writes it up for publication. The candidate would be expected to teach one course on distributed systems, and to help supervise some Master's theses in distributed systems. The rest of the time would be available for research. Salary depends on age and experience, according to civil service rules. Interested candidates should send (by email) a resume containing: - Name: - Home and work addresses and phone numbers: - Email and FAX addresses: - Age/Marital status/children: - B.S.: institution, date, major - M.S.: institution, date, major, thesis title, supervisor's name - Ph.D: institution, date, major, thesis title, supervisor's name - Computer systems/languages you know well: - Three professional references (name, phone #, email address): - Proposed starting date (position is open starting July 1, 1991) - Current position, employer, and duties: - Previous work history: - Publication list: - A short summary of your current research: - A short summary of what you would like to work on here (preferably related to something we are doing here): Please send either a troff -ms file, or flat ASCII text. Amsterdam is a pleasant place to live and work in. Everyone here speaks fluent English. If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them. Please reply within a week, if possible. I will be going abroad for 3 weeks on June 28, and no mail will be answered in my absence. Andy Tanenbaum (ast@cs.vu.nl)
