with two special programs on

- randomized and parallel computation

- complexity of computation in algebra, geometry, and
  number theory

               BONN, JUNE 2 - JULY 3, 1987

The Workshop will be organized by the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Mathematik
and the Departments of Mathematics, Computer Science and Operations Research
of the University of Bonn shortly after the Bonn 27. Internationale
Mathematische Arbeitstagung (June 12 - 19, 1987).

The Program Committee consists of Ravi Kannan, Marek Karpinski
(Co-chairman), Laszlo Lovasz, Hendrik W. Lenstra Jr., Michael Sipser,
Volker Strassen (Co-chairman), Eli Upfal, and Don Zagier.

The core of the workshop will consist of a series of expository lectures
to be given by Richard M. Karp, Hendrik W. Lenstra Jr., Laszlo Lovasz,
Andrew Odlyzko, Michael O. Rabin, Volker Strassen, and Don Zagier. There will
also be a special lecture on lower bounds for the circuit complexity given
by A.A. Razborov. In addition there will be a number of research
communications presented and ample time will be available for informal
discussions, problem oriented sessions, etc.

The scheduled problem session themes are:

1. Complexity of parallel computation
2. Randomized parallel algorithms
3. VLSI algorithms and architectures
4. Lower bounds for the circuit complexity
5. Complexity of computation in algebra and number theory
6. Algorithms and the geometry of numbers
7. Elliptic curves, primality test and cryptography

Those interested in contributing to problem sessions should contact:

TRANSPORTATION

You may fly to either Frankfurt or to Cologne/Bonn airport.

An hourly train service from Frankfurt airport to Bonn provides a fast,
comfortable trip: tickets may be purchased at the railway counter in the
airport building. Trains leave from the basement of the building.
An airport bus "FL" leaves the Cologne/Bonn airport every 30 minutes for
the center of Bonn (the bus terminus is situated opposite the main
railway station): tickets may be purchased on the bus.

Should you arrive at Brussels, Amsterdam or Luxembourg, take a bus or
train to the main railway station and then a train to Bonn. The trip
from Brussels or Amsterdam will take about 4 hours, from Luxembourg
approx. 3 hours.

WEATHER

The climate in the Rhine valley is generally mild. July weather
in Bonn is, however, unpredictable and participants should be prepared
for a few rainy days. The average temperature in July is 18 degrees Celsius.
