Date: 20 Oct 1987 23:38:41-EDT (Tuesday) From: "Carl H. Smith" <CHSMITH@note.nsf.gov> Subject: The Funding of Theory As most everyone in the community is aware of, the funding of theoretical computer science by the National Science Foundation has been eroding rapidly in recent years. In order to reverse the trend, it is necessary to answer the question: What has the theory community done for computer science in general, for science in general, for the good of the country, for motherhood and apple pie? I will compile a list of answers to present to the proper authorities (the ones with the money). Ideally, the list (when finished) will contain short paragraphs, each describing a result and its significance without the use of subscripts or superscripts. Input for this list is hereby requested.
