[ut.theory] growing old

plragde@maytag.waterloo.edu (Prabhakar Ragde) (09/18/89)

This is the official notice of the "over-the-hill" party to be held in
honour (in disgrace?) of Prabhakar Ragde's 30th birthday, at 9 Mary
Street, Georgetown. The birthday is on the 28th of September but since
he has to teach two classes that day, the party will be on the 30th
(that's Saturday). Note: this is not a birthday party, and anyone who
is considering implementing any of the usual inanities that
characterize a birthday party should be reminded that while capital
punishment is forbidden in this country, accidents do happen.

This party is an excuse to dress up, revel in the stereotypes of old
age, and eat and drink a great deal. We will provide some food, but
donations are welcome; you should bring a beverage of choice. You are
encouraged to be creative in your preparations, while your mind is
still working (I refer not to the onset of senility -- it is far too
late for that -- but to the lassitude that affects us later in the
term as the last of our summer energy drains away). Because all
invitees are from out of town, we will start the proceedings early,
around 4:00 pm. This lets us take advantage of the deck and the
backyard, and gets you home at a reasonable hour, if that is your
choice.

In order to get some idea of the amount of food required, we would
appreciate some indication of whether you are coming, preferably by
Tuesday the 26th. You can e-mail to Naomi (nishi@theory.toronto.edu),
or me (plragde@maytag.waterloo.edu) or phone us at (416) 873-4924
(there is an answering machine). Following are directions on the
various options in getting to Georgetown. If people have space in
their car or need a ride out, they can let Naomi or me know and we can
try to match up people.

One more thing. The kitchen floor still has a hole in it and the walls
are still unpainted. The roof, however, is still working.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
By car: take the 401 (westbound from Toronto, eastbound from Waterloo)
to the Trafalgar Road exit (between Highway 25 and Winston Churchill
Drive). Take Trafalgar Road north into Georgetown. Ignore the sign
that tells you to turn right, and keep going straight until the road
ends at Highway 7. Turn right on Highway 7 and curve back into
Georgetown. You'll go over a railway bridge and come down a hill; the
road will fork, one branch going left and one straight into downtown.
Do neither: stay in the right lane, and just BEFORE the fork, make a
right turn on Henry St. Then take the next right onto Cleaveholm, and
the next left onto Mary. We're half a block up, on the left, number 9.

By train: GO commuter trains do not run on Saturday. There is VIA
service, but Naomi left her schedule at home (ask her if you are
interested). Same-day round trip is something like $11.

By bus: there are GO buses leaving York Mills at 14:45, 15:15, 17:45,
20:45. The trip takes about 70 minutes. You want to get off at Moore
Park Plaza, walk south on Main/Hwy. 7 and take a right on Henry. There
is a bus leaving at 21:00; if that's too early, you can crash on our
floor and take the 9:00 or 12:00 train the next morning. You'll have
to help clean up, however, and we wouldn't mind some advance notice if
this is your intention.
