[rec.birds] Directions to Brigantine

gp@picuxa.UUCP (Greg Pasquariello X1190) (12/22/87)

I'm posting this in response to a direct request for directions to Brigantine
Wildlife refuge. My mailer always seems to barf when I try and send to Rutgers,so I figured I would just post it. Also, I though others might be interested,
so no flames please.

To reach Brigantine:

Take 287 south to the Garden State Parking Lot (er... Parkway). Follow the GSP
south until you cross a large river (I think it is the Bass River, but I'm not
sure). The next exit, exit 48, is route 9 south. Take route 9 south (cross the
parkway) for 5 or six miles to Great Creek Road, which will be on your left.
There is a small goose sign that points to the refuge, but it is easily missed.
Follow Great Creek Road, and it will take you right into the refuge. As you
approach, you will cross a small bridge with a pond on both sides. This is
sometimes a good stop, and should produce some ducks and the like. In summer,
this spot often gives us Least Bittern and King Rail. When your done here,
the road curves to the right. Follow it, and you will enter the main parking
area. Nearby is a small shack with the sighting book (what birds have been seen
lately, and the ones you're most likely to miss :-)), and a map to the refuge.

Hope these help. Good birding.
