Yesterday, I drove 170 miles, to a two hundred square yard field, to look for a 5 inch bird that had wandered hundreds of miles from it's winter home...and I found it! The bird was a LeConte's Sparrow, one of the rarest of the rare in these parts. It was a beautiful adult, that allowed me to approach within about four feet. It's probably the most beautiful sparrow that I have seen, far sur- passing the White-crowned which had previously held the title. Every single feather was in place, and showed no visible wear. The color of the breast was amazing. No current field guide does this bird _any_ justice. If there are any comments from those of you that live among these little buggers, regarding the bird, it's habits etc, I'd love to hear them. Post them to the net, as we need some traffic in this newsgroup.
