It is almost certainly a Carolina Wren.  The pattern described is 
recognizable, and the ringing sound seems to confirm it.  Officially, it
is said to say: "Tea-kettle, tea-kettle, tea-kettle, ..."  The song
is 'ventriloqual, and the singing bird may be very hard to see.  They often 
sing from within brushpiles and tangles.
