We also buy suet cakes in a store. The ones we buy come with a stainless
steel ring sticking out of the top, and little perches to insert around the
bottom. We use ordinary (but strong) string and hang the suet cake loose
from a tree branch, approx 6 feet from the ground. The birds go crazy for
it!! Most don't even use the little perches inserted in the suet cake--the
either hang on the side or sit on the top of the suet cake. It goes quickly!

Good luck!

When is the best time in the fall to start putting up suet
feeders or do you keep them up all year?
