[rec.birds] found a downed pigeon

mrl@druco.ATT.COM (Mark R. Longo) (09/07/88)

For lack of any other place to seek information, I'm posting here.
I don't normally read this news group, so please reply to me by email...

This morning I found what I believe to be a homing pigeon in my back
yard. I walked around after him for a few moments and it soon became evident
that he was indeed unable to fly. I believe him to be a homing pigeon
because of a green tag on one leg and a white tag on the other. I seem to
remember reading something somewhere that homing pigeons are banded
in this way. That is the total extent of my knowledge on the
subject.

It doesn't appear that the bird is injured in any way. His wing feathers
and tail feathers seem to be ok. What sort of things should I
look for to try to get this bird "off his feet" again, and what can I
tell from the bands on his legs. Is there any way of using the
info on them to get in touch with the owner? Any help would be appreciated.
