Rufous is a reddish brown, like the sides of a rufous-sided towhee.  Rufous
is also the "pet" name of my wife Ruth :-).

By the way, rufous is also the color of the streaking on the two saw-whet
owls my friend and I found at Jamaica Bay this weekend.  One was perched
only four feet away, at eye level, and looked like a small gnome.
