[rec.birds] Good birding spots around San Francisco

gpasq@picuxa.UUCP (Greg Pasquariello X1190) (01/25/89)

I will be traveling to UniForum in San Francisco this Feb 28-Mar 1.
Can anyone recommend some good birding spots in the area for the week after?

Thanks.
Greg

I have a few suggestions for birding in the SF area:

Lake Merritt in Oakland gets quite a few migrant birds that stay over
the winter. Also look for Black-crowned night herons and Great and Snowy
egrets.

Hayward Shoreline Nature Reserve (the actual name is close to that anyway).
This is an extended mud flat, canal area that ducks and shorebirds find
very attractive. They have a nice information center too. It is located
just east of the San Mateo bridge (highway 92).

Tilden Park in Berkeley has extensive trails and a very nice variety of
land birds to watch for.

Check out the nature preserve on the west side of Alameda, the island in
the bay off of Oakland. There is a nice, if short, stretch of beach that
is usually quite full of shorebirds.

For a day trip, try Point Reyes National Shoreline, north of San Francisco
for birding. Especially good is Limantour Beach and the associated bay/inlet.

Happy birding!
