I have noticed more pairs of nesting bluebirds this year than at any time in the past fifteen years. This is in the MD_DC_VA area. Most of the ones that I have spotted have been living in urban areas -- no kidding -- back yards. Have I just been extremely fortunate this year or are they on the rise? -- Ed Matthews Verdix Corporation edm@verdix.com (703) 378-7600

We had a successful nesting pair in our backyard this year - raised 3 babies. Last year 2 pairs raised 8. But I have to rip sparrow nests out of the bluebird boxes for the first 3 months of the season. If the bluebirds successfully inhabit a box and lay eggs early in the season, the sparrows will break them and build right on top of the bluebird nest - but usually by July the sparrows give up and the bluebirds can do it.
