I have received a couple of request for directions to Hawk Mountain, so here they are. In addition I am providing directions to Mt Peter NY, my local hawking mountain, for thos of you in the NY/NJ area. Enjoy! Hawk Mountain, PA Take Route 78 18-20 miles west of Allentown PA, to exit 11 (Rt 143) Follow Rt 143 north for approximately 3 miles, and make a left toward Eckville. There is a sign here for the sanctuary. Follow this road for approximately 7 miles to the sanctuary parking lot. The south lookout is approx. 200 yards from the parking lot. The north lookout is about a half mile up the trail, and is the better lookout of the two. The best time to arrive is in the morning. The birds will begin to fly around 9 am. Mt. Peter, NY Mount Peter is a Hawk Lookout in southern New York State that is run jointly by Highlands Audubon and Orange County Audubon. It is manned 7 days a week (although this year we are short handed, so maybe not) from September 1 to November 15. The big hawk days start around the 10th or 15th of Spetember, and continue thru late October. The thing I like best about it, is that it is a very friendly hawkwatch. Many others tend to be clichish (sp?). To reach it, take Route 17 North (or west) to Route 17A. Follow route 17A to Greenwood Lake NY. Here you will begin climbing a hill toward Rt 94 in Warwick. At the top of the hill is a parking lot with a broad panorama of Orange County, and a burnt out restaurant. The hawk watch is behind the restaurant, and up a little hill. There will be an expert hawker up there most any day, so if you are unsure of your hawks, they will be glad to help you. Greg Pasquariello ...!att!picuxa!gpasq
