I just returned from a trip to SW Florida during which I spent some time at the J. N. "Ding" Darling Wildlife Preserve on Sanibel Island. I rented a 500mm lens to try to get some super bird photos. Here is an interesting incident that occurred. There was one small lake which had a sand bar close to the road covered with dead branches (it may be artificially constructed for visitors). This mini-island contained brown pelicans, double-crested comorants, a reddish egret, some Louisiana herons, and a white heron. When I arrived, some other photographers were already shooting the tableau. One pointed out to me a large alligator which was sunning on the shore of the tiny island. He suggested I take a picture of the peaceful scene. As I snapped away, the other people left. Suddenly, all the birds (except the reddish egret) took off in alarm. I knew there was an osprey a short distance away, and looked up to see if he had caused the disturbance. He was still perched. The reddish egret also seemed confused (where did everybody go?). Then I saw the alligator chomping its jaws. It soon became apparent that he had nabbed a Louisiana heron. Although I was somewhat shocked and sickened, I decided to snap some pictures of the event. I haven't had them developed yet. It was interesting how calmly those birds shared their island with the gator since this event probably happens regularly. By the way, I may also have gotten a photo of a pileated woodpecker, although he was in dark shade. All in all, it was a rewarding day and I am looking forward to viewing the results. Janet Levy
