Don't limit yourself to east-west travel. There are some nice marshlands to the north, around the Sutter Buttes, where I've seen a nice variety of birds. It's the first place I've seen Sandhill Cranes, for example, as well as Yellow-Headed Blackbirds. If you have a long weekend, keep going north up to the Modoc plateau/Lava Beds/Warner Mountains. It's about an eight hour drive from where you live, and the birding there is wonderful. I sure wish the UC would open a major research institution in Alturas... Keith
