[rec.birds] Deciphering a quarantine band

rac@sherpa.uucp (Roger Cornelius) (11/15/89)

I realize this group is for bird watching (at least that's what the
newsgroups file says), but it is also the only bird related group.

Does anyone know how to decipher the info contained on a quarantine
leg band? My vet told me the first letter denotes the state which
the bird went through quarantine in (in this case, F for Florida), but
couldn't give any more info.

I'd like to find out the date he came through, as well as any other
interesting information. The friend who gave me the bird thought it was
approximately 1 1/2 years old, but couldn't be sure.

Unfortunately, with the number of smuggled birds entering the U.S.,
many of whom have counterfit quarantine bands, it has become more
difficult to tell anything about a bird from its band.

Try asking the USDA quarantine station nearest you. There should
be one in Miami.
