[rec.birds] Raptors in E. Kansas

rising@utzoo.uucp (Jim Rising) (12/29/89)

Recently, while visiting relatives, I had an opportunity to take
a roadside raptor count along ca. 225 km of road, between Kansas
City and Baxter Springs, from along hiway 69, in eastern Kansas.
On the afternoon of 25 Dec. we counted 117 Red-tailed Hawks, 17
American Kestrels, 2 Rough-legged Hawks, 1 Bald Eagle, 1 Northern
Harrier, and 1 Red-shouldered Hawk in about 2 1/2 hrs. along this
road. A couple of the R-ts. were Harlan's Hawks. Every time we
drive this stretch it seems like we see more hawks than previously.
I hope that this indicates a real increase in raptor numbers. Also
saw two coyotes.
