THE RED-TAIL HAWK

(the following may be sung to the tune of "Bad Bad Leroy Brown")

Well, the south side of the forest
Is a very pretty spot,
But if you go up there, you'd better just beware
Of the bird called the Red-Tail Hawk!

Well, the Red-Tail, he's a raptor,
And he stand about one-foot-two.
He can spot his prey from a mile away,
And boy, he's got his eye on you!

And he's bad, bad, Red-Tail Hawk!
The baddest bird in the whole damn flock!
Badder than a great horned owl,
And meaner than that old James Watt!

Well, the Red-tail, he's a hunter,
And he like to sit up high,
And he keep a watch on the world below
And there ain't nothin' escapes his eye!

He likes mice and rats and weasels,
He eats toads and rabbits, too.
And if you go near his place, and he don't like your face,
Boy, he might just chomp on you!

And he's bad, bad, Red-Tail Hawk!
The baddest bird in the whole damn flock!
Badder than a great horned owl,
And meaner than that old James Watt!

He gots claws as sharp as razors,
He gots a beak that's like a knife!
He gots these great big wings, the most magnif'cent things
You've ever seen in all your life!

He's the mightiest of hunters!
You watch him soar and dive and toss.
He'd take first prize in a buteo pageant,
And he let you know who's boss!

And he's bad, bad, Red-Tail Hawk!
The baddest bird in the whole damn flock!
Badder than a great horned owl,
And meaner than that old James Watt!

Yes he's badder than that old James Watt,
And meaner than a great horned owl!

(the above having been composed in honor of "Red", a crippled
hawk at the Vermont Raptor Center, who can nonetheless still
kill a man at forty paces with a single glare.)
