[rec.birds] Bausch-Lomb 800mm mirror lens

In rec.photo, there has recently been some discussion of handholding
600mm mirror lenses. I have just seen a description of a Bausch and
Lomb 800mm lens and spotting scope (Model 800 Mirror), that claims
it is possible to handhold it at 1/1000.
It is also touted as a relatively inexpensive spotting scope.
From the blurb:
"The B &L 800 uses high-resolution four-element Schmidt-Cassegrain
optics for sharp visual and photgraphic images, free from the
spurious color halos found in every refractor scope in its price range.
Multi-coatings ... reduce glare. 18 turn rotary knob focusing."

List price is $472, available from discount place at $249.
Armored version, add $50. Extra 83x eyepiece, $53.

Does anyone have actual field experience with this item?
I'm interested in its capabilities both as lens and as scope.
