[rec.birds] Bird Subjects

sandra@pyrtech (Sandra Macika) (03/15/90)

First I would like to say that I don't post very often, but I really
enjoy reading the articles. Especially the recent stories about
hummingbirds and owls.

Recently, I have had a couple of questions regarding the use of the
word INDOOR or OUTDOOR in the beginning of the Subject Line. I
would like to tell the story of this mostly for the newcomers.

I have been reading articles on this news group for a couple of years now.
There had been a reoccurring war regarding "indoor" vs. "outdoor". The outdoor
people wanted the indoor people to go to rec.pets, but the indoor people
didn't want to go there because that group is all about cats and dogs. There
was discussion of starting a new news group, like rec.birds.pets, but there
wasn't enough traffic to warrant it. You would not think it was such
a big thing, but it came up over and over again. Often there would be
more articles about the war than about Birds!

Until someone (me) came up with a Brilliant idea! (Well, it worked anyway)
The indoor people use the word INDOOR in the beginning of the Subject Line,
and outdoor people use the word OUTDOOR in the beginning of the Subject Line.
Then, you can use the KILL file to automatically delete the articles you are
not interested in. (the KILL file is expalined below)

Duane Smith recently posted about Aviculture, specifically, about raising
wild game birds outdoors. Actually, this might be a third category.
You could always use the word:

AVICULT

or

GAME

(or something similar)

in the beginning of the Subject Line. That way the people who are not
interested can automatically delete the files, and those of us that
are interested can read on. Everyone would get the articles until they
actively decided to put that subject in their KILL file.

KILL File Explanation:

The easiest way to get this started is, whenever you see an article that
you aren't interested in, type

[Shift] K

The subject will then automatically go into a KILL file. Then any time
an article with that subject comes up, it will automatically be deleted.
Here is a copy of my KILL file:

THRU 2022
/: *INDOOR/:j
/: *Handholding long lenses /:j
/: *Camera/:j
/: *Stupid hunters/:j

You can edit the KILL file by typing:

[Ctrl] k

while you are in the news.

To edit the file, type:

[Ctrl] k

Hope this Helps.
And thanks for listening (reading),
Sandra
