Recently, I had just driven around the corner from my apartment in densest Santa Monica when I spotted a large drab brown bird gliding up the trunk of a tree. I jump out and chased it down the block until it settled breifly in a bare tree, where I got a good look at it. Size, facial pattern, range, environment and behavior all indicate an immature Cooper's Hawk which is new for me and seems to be a pretty neat catch. Incidently, it looks like the Nat. Geo. guide mislabels these hawks in terms of sex, maturity. Jon. Gingerich
