A Summary of the Tape Prepared On
                          Monday, May the 28th

The 1990, fifth annual Warbler Competition Walks, for the Harford County
Chapter of MOS, are now complete as of this morning, Monday, May the
28th. The official winner of the competition is Dennis Kirkwood for his
Sunday, May the 27th competition in the Upper Deer Creek area with 51
species, 6 warblers, and 6 uniques, meaning species that no other leader
had during the competition, 2 of which were warblers, for a grand total
of 65 points. Congratulations Dennis! The 6 unique species were RED-
HEADED WOODPECKER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, WORM-EATING WARBLER, WILLOW FLY-
CATCHER, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, and PURPLE MARTIN. In second place was Jon
Cupp, Jr. for his competition at Harford Glen on Saturday, May the 19th,
with 62 points, although he did have 65 points before Dennis Kirkwood's
competition, and Jon Cupp also had the most species of all the competi-
tion with 53 species and 5 warblers. This is the third time in 4 years
that the leader with the most species lost due to the point system. The
entire count for the competition was 106 species in all with 19 war-
blers.

On Sunday, May the 27th, a WILLOW FLYCATCHER, WARBLING VIREO and NORTH-
ERN ORIOLE were all at the Little Deer Creek upstream from Harford
Creamery Road, and a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was in its usual spot at
Patchwork Farms off of Bradenbaugh Road about 3/4 of a mile east of Rt.
23. At Hidden Valley, were Deer Creek crosses Madonna Road, there were
at least 5 WORM-EATING WARBLERS singing on territory, as were
BLACK&WHITE WARBLER, LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, KEN-
TUCKY WARBLER, as well as a PILEATED WOODPECKER. GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS
are in the hayfields around Bradenbaugh and Harford Creamery Road in Ma-
donna, Harford County, MD, and the BOBOLINKS are no longer being seen in
that area.

A MORNING WARBLER was caught and banded at 4PM on Sunday, May the 27th,
at Harford Glen in Harford County, MD. GRAY-CHEEKED and SWAINSON'S
THRUSH were observed at Harford Glen on Monday, May the 28th during the
warbler competition.

On Saturday, May the 26th at Bombay Hook NWR in Delaware, the 3 FULVOUS
WHISTLING-DUCKS were still present at Shearness Pool in the SE corner,
being seen there since Sunday, May the 20th. Port Mahon Road was just
covered with horseshoe crabs and their eggs are everywhere. The rain
had washed out Port Mahon Road on Saturday, which made birding that area
a bit difficult, although several VIRGINIA and CLAPPER RAILS were seen
and tons of shorebirds including tens of thousands of SEMI-PALMATED
SANDPIPERS and the usual DUNLIN, WILLET and occasional LEAST SANDPIPER,
and occasional WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER. Lots of BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER
were in the farm fields on the road down to Port Mahon Road. There were
no sightings reported of the RUFF, REEVE, or the CURLEW SANDPIPER, which
possibly was due to the heavy rain.

On Saturday, May the 26th, the FORKED-TAILED FLYCATCHER and the BLACK-
HEADED GULL that were previously reported at Chincoteague were searched
for but not found. According to the wildlife record there, they were
last reported last weekend. A BLACK TERN was reported at Chincoteague
at Snow Goose Pool along the Wildlife Drive on Saturday, May the 26th.

The Muddy Run bird identification classes will be starting on Thursday,
June the 7th thru July the 12th. They will be meeting every Thursday
morning at 9AM at the Muddy Run information center. To register for
these classes, call (717) 284-4325.

There will be a "Down-by-the-River Weekend" at the Conowingo Dam in Har-
ford County, MD on Saturday and Sunday, June 9th and 10th. This is
sponsored by the Philadelphia Electric Co. The phone number for the
Philadelphia Electric Co.'s new recreation hotline covering fishing in-
formation and the recreational activities scheduled is (301) 457-2409.

This tape is changed regularly every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Rare
reports and updates on them are made in between as soon as possible.
Reporting from MD, PA, DE, VA, NJ and the DC area. To report your bird
sitings and trips, call (301) 838-4427.

This is June Vaughn thanking you for calling and wishing you Happy
