Charles Black reported on May 25 that he had a LEAST TERN at Bosque del Apache Refuge, Socorro County, feeding over the Middle Tour Loup. Also he saw a LEAST BITTERN. Earlier on May 15 a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at 8:15 p.m. at the southwestern corner of the south tour loop in the small channel next to the road with BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. Charles also reported MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRDS coming in reliably to the lookout tower on Signal Peak north of Cherry Creek Canyon near Pinos Altos, Grant County, May 24-25 with OLIVE WARBLERS and one GREATER PEWEE seen. Jim Black reported RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS and an AMERICAN REDSTART in Clovis State Park, Curry County, on May 22. This is the week for Blacks. Julia Black has "several" ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS at her home at 2414 36th Street in Los Alamos on May 21-22. LEAST TERNS had returned to Bitter Lake Refuge near Roswell, Chaves County, by May 16. The INCA DOVES were still at the Rose Gardens on Highland Street in Roswell On May 18. The INDIGO BUNTING pair apparently moved to Bitter Lake Refuge, and four CHIMNEY SWIFTS were at the Roswell Military Institute. Call Sherry Bixler at 622-0597 to see if any of these birds are still present. RED-FACED WARBLERS seemed to be in good numbers in southwestern New Mexico. They have been reported from Water Canyon, west of Socorro; Gallinas and Cherry Creek Canyons in Grant County, and in all the Forest Service campgrounds on the way up to the Gila Cliff Dwellings from Silver City in Grant and Catron Counties. The COMMON BLACK-HAWK was at the Glenwood Fish Hatchery, Catron County, on May 5; and a SPOTTED OWL was heard in the Signal Peak area. On April 28 a female THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was in the Zuni Mountains portion of the Cibola National Forest, McKinley County, on a burned area on Forest Road 178, 2.1 miles south of Forest Road 180. On Saturday, May 26, Sangre de Cristo Audubon will have a field trip to Frijoles Canyon, Bandelier National Monument near Los Alamos. Call Pat Insley for details at 092-0796 in Santa Fe.
