Charles Black reported on May 25 that he had a LEAST TERN at
Bosque del Apache Refuge, Socorro County, feeding over the Middle
Tour Loup. Also he saw a LEAST BITTERN. Earlier on May 15 a
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at 8:15 p.m. at the
southwestern corner of the south tour loop in the small channel
next to the road with BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS.
Charles also reported MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRDS coming in
reliably to the lookout tower on Signal Peak north of Cherry
Creek Canyon near Pinos Altos, Grant County, May 24-25 with OLIVE
WARBLERS and one GREATER PEWEE seen.
Jim Black reported RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS and an AMERICAN
REDSTART in Clovis State Park, Curry County, on May 22. This is
the week for Blacks.
Julia Black has "several" ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS at her
home at 2414 36th Street in Los Alamos on May 21-22.
LEAST TERNS had returned to Bitter Lake Refuge near
Roswell, Chaves County, by May 16.
The INCA DOVES were still at the Rose Gardens on Highland
Street in Roswell On May 18. The INDIGO BUNTING pair apparently
moved to Bitter Lake Refuge, and four CHIMNEY SWIFTS were at the
Roswell Military Institute. Call Sherry Bixler at 622-0597 to see
if any of these birds are still present.
RED-FACED WARBLERS seemed to be in good numbers in
southwestern New Mexico. They have been reported from Water
Canyon, west of Socorro; Gallinas and Cherry Creek Canyons in
Grant County, and in all the Forest Service campgrounds on the
way up to the Gila Cliff Dwellings from Silver City in Grant and
Catron Counties.
The COMMON BLACK-HAWK was at the Glenwood Fish Hatchery,
Catron County, on May 5; and a SPOTTED OWL was heard in the
Signal Peak area.
On April 28 a female THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was in the Zuni
Mountains portion of the Cibola National Forest, McKinley County,
on a burned area on Forest Road 178, 2.1 miles south of Forest
Road 180.

Los Alamos. Call Pat Insley for details at 092-0796 in Santa Fe.
